Should Michigan legalize marijuana? 57% say yes

Drug laws in regards to marijuana are currently in a sort of limbo in the United States. A growing number of states, including Colorado, Washington and California, have legalized marijuana for recreational and medicinal use. More states have legalized marijuana for medical reasons only.

Michigan is among the states that have legalized medicinal marijuana. Meanwhile, marijuana remains a controlled substance under federal law, though the U.S. Justice Department has not taken major action against states that have legalized the drug.

Should Michigan join the group of states where marijuana is legal to produce, sell, possess and use? A poll conducted by EPIC-MRA of Lansing suggests that the move has popular support.

According to MLive, 57 percent of those surveyed said they definitely, probably or likely would vote “yes” on a ballot question about legalizing marijuana with certain conditions imposed. This would suggest that such a question would easily pass if it ever gets on the ballot.

An attempt by MI Legalize, an advocacy group, to do just that failed last year, when state officials determined that the group’s petition contained signatures older than 180 days. The group is trying to get the issue on the ballot in 2018.

Currently, outside of the medical marijuana system the drug remains a controlled substance. Conviction for drug possession, distribution or production generally has serious consequences, including jail or prison time and heavy fines. However, a dedicated defense attorney gives you the best possible chance of a fair and just result to your case.
