Woman sentenced for felonies involving stealing of merchandise

Trial watchers in Michigan and elsewhere might be interested in a case of a 63-year-old woman in another state who has been sentenced to a 54-month stay in federal prison. According to court documents, the woman's arrest followed investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Secret Service. Reportedly, the felonies on which the federal judge convicted the woman were committed over a 19-year period.

Investigators found that the woman committed shoplifting at retail stores across the country. She disabled security devices at the stores where she stole merchandise by using shoplifting tools. She placed the shoplifted items in a large bag and left the stores without paying for them.

Investigators said she then offered the stolen objects for sale on eBay and via direct sales on the internet. Once sold, she packed and mailed the stolen merchandise. Reportedly, she dispatched the goods to the buyers via United Parcel Service, Federal Express and U.S. mail. Along with the prison sentence, the woman was ordered to pay restitution of $3.8 million. Also, after the 54-months in prison, she must serve supervised release for another three years.

Anyone in Michigan who faces felonies will likely retain the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney to protect his or her legal rights throughout the legal proceedings. It is a good idea to seek a defense attorney's services who has excellent skills in dealing with any post-conviction matters. Legal counsel may help convicted persons continue fighting to right any wrongs that might have been committed within the federal criminal justice system.
