According to the State of Michigan’s Attorney General, an insurance agent located in Muskegon was charged in June with both fraud and embezzlement using the money of his own clients. The insurance agent pleaded guilty to all charges that were brought against him.

Fraud and embezzlement

Fraud and embezzlement are two of the most common white-collar crimes committed by individuals around the country. In this case, the Muskegon agent pleaded guilty to three counts of embezzlement by an insurance agent as well as one count of insurance fraud and using a computer to commit a crime.

The Attorney General discovered that between 2014 and 2016, more than $17,200 was taken from the insurance agent’s client’s own money rather than being utilized toward insurance premiums. In total, 42 clients were affected by the insurance agent’s fraud. The agent was ordered to pay back more than $13,000 in restitution even before he entered his original guilty plea in front of the judge. Additionally, he was charged $1,500 in fees attached to the guilty plea itself. Farmers Insurance has since honored the policies that were impacted by the embezzlement and fraud attempt.

Legal assistance for criminal charges

If you are being charged with any white-collar crimes, obtaining a legal defense is a must. An attorney may explain all of the options you have available based on the charges, the severity of the crime and your own history or current standing in the community.

Dealing with a fraud or embezzlement charge does not have to feel overwhelming with an experienced attorney to help. A legal team may provide you with insight as you work toward an outcome in your favor.
